Decision & Perspective

There comes a time when you decide you have to make a change. Until we get to that point things really won't change. We might lose a little weight only to gain it back and feel like everything we did was for nothing. But when we get to the point where we realize what we're doing isn't working and we've had enough, we are willing to explore other options and ways of doing things. That's when change is possible.

For me that time came after I was remarried. We had been going out to eat a lot, we were celebrating. And we celebrated good, we celebrated with appetizers, full course meals and dessert every time we went out to eat! I was watching the scale go up a little bit of the time until finally the moment came when I saw a picture of myself and I didn't even recognize myself. It was then for me that I realized I needed to put the brakes on what was happening and I need to CHANGE!

I had tried a diet before- the Lemonade Diet... The Lemonade Diet (Master Cleanse Diet) Review But be careful if you call it a diet because devoted followers will refer to it as a cleanse not a diet. But anyway I tried it, only for 5 days. It worked, I did loose some weight, but even more it was a lesson on how little we really need to sustain our bodies. Believe it or not as long as you drink the concoction of lemon juice every 2 hours religiously you will not feel hungry and as though you are going to starve. That in and of itself amazed me. It was also a lesson in the social and emotional aspects of food. We as people eat to celebrate, we eat to comfort, we eat for entertainment. Often it is not hunger or the need to nourish our bodies that motivates us to eat. Taking that time to take a step back from something that we just take for granted like breathing and the blood coursing through our veins. Especially in this western society where we have and abundance of food and options around every corner and down every isle at the grocery store. I don't believe it is a healthy choice, or choice that sustains long-term health.

But, who wants to starve yourself... when you can eat? I believed that God gave us food to enjoy and I knew that there had to be a healthier way of eating and losing weight at the same time, in contrast to all of the flash diets that everyone was trying. I was looking for something more than a quick fix, I wanted a life change, a more sustainable way of eating, for LONG TERM.

I stumbled upon a website that basically talked about good nutrition and it started my journey in learning how to eat healthy and to be satisfied. Here's some of Wiki tip's

I enjoy the flavors of food too much to basically starve myself for an extended period of time... I knew that wasn't going to work for me. Basically the advice that I came across was... what we hear all of the time- to eat lots of fruits and vegetables as many as you want to add nuts low-fat meat in small portions and some healthy dairy, but the most important thing was to AVOID processed foods, lower sugar intake and especially AVOID trans fat specifically anything hydrogenate.

I went to the store and loaded up on fruits and vegetables, my cart was full of color. I was excited... I was excited that I got to EAT AND LOSE WEIGHT at the same time. I remember making my first salad with those vegetables and thinking how much I was going to enjoy this. I felt like I was at a nice restaurant eating one of the fancy salads that I always like to order, but now I was doing it in my own home. I began researching foods nutritional and metobolic values. I will devote pages to these findings, they will include things such as the power of protein, Not all ingredients are created equally even when they share the SAME NAME!, Super foods, Lemons, Lentils, Sprouts, Spices, Eggs, Rice, Honey, Cinammon, Fruit, Meat, Yogurt, CHOCOLATE and many more. I will also discuss various popular diets... The Dunkan Diet, HCG, etc.

When I made the decision to change the way I ate it was October usually the time when I can expect to put on more weight. But instead, I was changing the way I thought about food... one thing I thought a lot about is how as Americans, every day, families eat as though it's a feast... Everyday should not be a feast! We are a generation of over indulgence. A feast is supposed to be a special occasion, the days in between we should eat things, yes, that we enjoy but not fill our plates like it's Thanksgiving, we should be moderate with what we eat. I took the time to look to other cultures, I observed the people who work at the Chinese buffet. I was trying to understand how they weren't gaining a lot of weight while they had all this buffet of food surrounding them all day... what where they eating? I had often wondered what they ate. One night I was given the opportunity to see what they eat, I was at the buffet around closing, all of the workers had gotten themselves something to eat... I was impressed by the simplicity of their choices rice, some greens, fresh fruit and some soup stock. They didn't touch the fat laden Americanized Chinese food that they were serving to the Americans. They were serving the American culture but they were maintaining their own.

Hopefully something I share will help you to reclaim a healthier life style and enjoy the taste of it along the way!! And remember, we CAN enjoy a feast on special occasions if we eat healthy and reasonable portions on a regular basis.

What's this blog about anyway?

To live a full life... A whole life, a growing, breathing flourishing life. What does that mean? After all when we wake up each day the air insists on coming in and out of our lungs our heart continues to beat, regardless of what we put into our mouths, or how we interact with the people or world around us. So we are therefore... alive. But, how rich is that life? Is it growing? Are we growing, reaching stretching, learning? What is the state of our body, our minds, our emotions? Let me preface, and make it clear right now I am not a Dr. I am not an expert. I am not going to give you a magic solution to solve all your health issues. Ok, disclaimer out of the way... But, I, like you, have learned a lot from the thing we call life here on this revolving sphere and I am going to share some of those things here in this blog.

I recently lost some weight and had some friends ask me to teach them what was involved, that is how this blog was planted. I felt  that here would be a good way to reach them and any others who have a similar desire. So in this blog I will be sharing information on what I have learned from my own research about healthy nutrition and how what we eat effects us. I do not subscribe to any one 'diet' ie. Atkins, Weight Watchers etc. When we talk about diet I have always been turned off. Diet is like a bad word to me, denial and control were always the first things that came to my mind. Most diets tell people what to eat, how much and when. Maybe that works for some other people, but I personally am too independent for that approach. What I do is study food- what is good and bad for our bodies and why. I found out that you can EAT great tasting food WHILE loosing weight. I have researched different diets and different cultures to understand what helps them to be healthy and have lives of longevity. I will share those things and let you pull what you like and decide if there is something to apply to you.

Something my friend said to me jokingly was, they needed to learn 'to eat to live, not live to eat'. I giggled a little, but then I thought about that and wished I could have slammed the breaks on the misconception that healthy eating and living is not pleasurable. I find the opposite is true. Healthy eating and living is empowering and full of flavor and yes- life. Unhealthy eating and living is draining, heavy and debilitating.

Also I believe that when we are discussing our health habits we need to look at our whole selves and why we hold onto emotional weight as well and how our emotional weight effects our physical weight. Those issues need to be faced if one wants to be successful at having a whole, healthy, nutritious- blooming life. Otherwise our emotional weeds will choke out any progress we try to make. So some of the posts will address emotional health as well.

I hope you can use it all to strengthen your life and help you to BLOOM!
