There comes a time when you decide you have to make a change. Until we get to that point things really won't change. We might lose a little weight only to gain it back and feel like everything we did was for nothing. But when we get to the point where we realize what we're doing isn't working and we've had enough, we are willing to explore other options and ways of doing things. That's when change is possible.
For me that time came after I was remarried. We had been going out to eat a lot, we were celebrating. And we celebrated good, we celebrated with appetizers, full course meals and dessert every time we went out to eat! I was watching the scale go up a little bit of the time until finally the moment came when I saw a picture of myself and I didn't even recognize myself. It was then for me that I realized I needed to put the brakes on what was happening and I need to CHANGE!
I had tried a diet before- the Lemonade Diet... The Lemonade Diet (Master Cleanse Diet) Review But be careful if you call it a diet because devoted followers will refer to it as a cleanse not a diet. But anyway I tried it, only for 5 days. It worked, I did loose some weight, but even more it was a lesson on how little we really need to sustain our bodies. Believe it or not as long as you drink the concoction of lemon juice every 2 hours religiously you will not feel hungry and as though you are going to starve. That in and of itself amazed me. It was also a lesson in the social and emotional aspects of food. We as people eat to celebrate, we eat to comfort, we eat for entertainment. Often it is not hunger or the need to nourish our bodies that motivates us to eat. Taking that time to take a step back from something that we just take for granted like breathing and the blood coursing through our veins. Especially in this western society where we have and abundance of food and options around every corner and down every isle at the grocery store. I don't believe it is a healthy choice, or choice that sustains long-term health.
But, who wants to starve yourself... when you can eat? I believed that God gave us food to enjoy and I knew that there had to be a healthier way of eating and losing weight at the same time, in contrast to all of the flash diets that everyone was trying. I was looking for something more than a quick fix, I wanted a life change, a more sustainable way of eating, for LONG TERM.
But, who wants to starve yourself... when you can eat? I believed that God gave us food to enjoy and I knew that there had to be a healthier way of eating and losing weight at the same time, in contrast to all of the flash diets that everyone was trying. When I made the decision to change the way I ate it was October usually the time when I can expect to put on more weight. But instead, I was changing the way I thought about food... one thing I thought a lot about is how as Americans, every day, families eat as though it's a feast... Everyday should not be a feast! We are a generation of over indulgence. A feast is supposed to be a special occasion, the days in between we should eat things, yes, that we enjoy but not fill our plates like it's Thanksgiving, we should be moderate with what we eat. I took the time to look to other cultures, I observed the people who work at the Chinese buffet. I was trying to understand how they weren't gaining a lot of weight while they had all this buffet of food surrounding them all day... what where they eating? I had often wondered what they ate. One night I was given the opportunity to see what they eat, I was at the buffet around closing, all of the workers had gotten themselves something to eat... I was impressed by the simplicity of their choices rice, some greens, fresh fruit and some soup stock. They didn't touch the fat laden Americanized Chinese food that they were serving to the Americans. They were serving the American culture but they were maintaining their own.
